Ramón Calsina Baró (Barcelona, 1901–1992).

After beginning his studies at the Baixas Academy in Barcelona, Ramón Calsina entered La Lonja Art School in 1920, where he was a pupil of Feliu Mestres. He made his solo debut in 1930 at Sala Parés, and exhibited in Paris the following year. Notable retrospective exhibitions were held in Barcelona in 1957 and 1966.
Calsina’s style, closely related to Magical Realism, is precise and stylized—often ironic and filled with unusual or fantastical details. His work shows the influence of Goya, Daumier, and Hogarth.
As a draftsman, he produced illustrations, posters, and stained-glass designs. He also created costume and stage designs for Xavier Berenguel’s play “El casament de la Xela” (1938). Between 1931 and 1933 he collaborated with the German magazine Der Querschnitt, and illustrated major literary works including Don Quixote and the writings of Edgar Allan Poe.
Calsina received the Ynglada-Guillot International Drawing Prize in 1964 and the prestigious Creu de Sant Jordi in 1990. In 1984, a group of poets, writers, and artists launched a public initiative to honor him, resulting in a major retrospective organized by the Barcelona Savings Bank with the support of the Generalitat of Catalonia. Another important exhibition followed in 1990 at Madrid’s Conde Duque Cultural Center.
His works are held in several Spanish museums and prominent private collections. In 2009, the Ramón Calsina Foundation was established by his heirs to preserve and promote his artistic legacy.
