About the Item

Artwork sold with frame (84 x 100.5 x 4 cm) René Guinand (1892–1983) was a Swiss painter and educator, celebrated for his contributions to 20th-century Swiss art through his evocative landscapes, still lifes, and urban scenes. Born on November 15, 1892, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Guinand moved with his family to Geneva in 1896. He pursued his artistic education at the École des Beaux-Arts de Genève in 1916, where he had the opportunity to meet the renowned Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler. This formative period marked the beginning of a distinguished career that spanned several decades. From 1925 to 1934, Guinand resided in Paris, immersing himself in the vibrant art scene of the time. During his stay, he engaged with influential artists such as Othon Friesz, Savin, Henry de Waroquier, and sculptor Charles Despiau. He actively participated in prominent exhibitions, including the Salon des Indépendants, Salon des Tuileries, and the Salon d'Automne. Concurrently, he showcased his work in Geneva at venues like the Musée Rath, the Athénée Museum, and the Moos Gallery. Guinand's artistic style is characterized by a harmonious blend of modernist abstraction and representational clarity. His works often depict serene Swiss landscapes, bustling urban scenes, and meticulously composed still lifes. Notable pieces include "Danseuse en roses" (1945), "Vue d'Onex" (1941), and "Ville et ciel" (1981), each reflecting his keen observation and mastery of form and color. In recognition of his artistic achievements, Guinand was appointed as a professor at the Geneva School of Fine Arts in 1944, where he influenced a new generation of Swiss artists. His works have been featured in numerous exhibitions and continue to be sought after in art auctions, with prices varying based on the piece's size and medium. René Guinand passed away in 1983 in Thônex, near Geneva. His legacy endures through his contributions to Swiss art and his influence as an educator and artist
