About the Item

Stunning and powerful dead nature starred in a bouquet of lush flowers in a blue vase leaning on a small auxiliary table. The background is dark, enhancing the luminosity and chromatic richness of the flowers, which have a wide chromatic range (yellow, lilac, violet and green). It presents the characteristic style of the genre to which it corresponds, realistic and thorough, which gradually gained weight in the History of Art. The great artist Caravaggio (1573-1610) was one of the first artists to represent dead natures with a knowledge of pictorial work, but there were many who earned him at some point in his career. With origins in ancient times and very popular in Western art since the 17th century, the winery gives the artist more compositional freedom than other pictorial genres such as the landscape or portraits. Before 1700, they often contained a religious and allegorical symbolism in relation to the objects they represented. Also known as dead natures, they usually present animals, flowers, fruits, foods, plants... Their development is part of the context of growing appreciation about painting and the explosion of interest in naturalism and imitation of nature that began to develop at the end of the previous century. This work manifests its theatrical character and some other reminiscences of the Baroque in, for example, the black curtain that appears in the background, the use of chiaroscuro... The rich floral composition emerges in a dramatic way of darkness, directly illuminated, and in this way a depth effect is created, emphasizing this contrast of lights and shadows, which brings some dynamism to a static scene. It rises as a sublime and beautiful, exquisite work and of high pictorial quality. It does not only seek a visual delight, but invites the viewer to contemplation of the passage of time, deepening the fleeting beauty of nature. Roger Chapelain-Midy (1904, Paris, 1992) Roger Chapelain-Midy was a French artist whose training began at the Beaux-Arts School and the Carmon workshop. Later, he continued his studies at the Académie de Montparnasse. In 1927, he exhibited at the Autumn Hall in Paris and, in 1929, in the Hall of Independents and the Hall of Tuileries. Free-spirited artist, Chapelain was also a brilliant designer and stage designer, qualities that undoubtedly influence his pictorial work. It could be said that his projection turned to the formation of a Renaissance man, a period he greatly admired and on which his artistic creation is based. The 17th century, and especially the French artist Poussin (1594-1665), were also the subject of admiration and study for the artist. Influential artist of his time, his style acquires a theatrical and highly aesthetic hue due to his numerous artistic qualities. At a time when the pictorials gained strength, it reflected a personal style, true to itself, starting from a classic, balanced and measured volume scheme, and entering a chromatic scale of great bright and symbolic impact. It flirts with surrealism and symbolism although it stands out for its still lifes and landscapes. His works are in numerous private and public collections.
