About the Item

Steven H. Rehfeld (American, born 1954) "What Remains" 2022 Oil Paint, Canvas, Stretcher Bars The artist signed the back of the painting. In "What Remains", Steven H. Rehfeld constructs a fractured still life that feels more like a memory map than a table setting. Marble slabs, fruit, and relics of domesticity share space with disembodied classical faces and an eye embedded in a blooming rose—symbols of beauty, history, and witness. The composition splinters inward, as if time and space collapsed across the dining table. What’s left is not decay, but a haunting archive of presence—quiet, coded, and deeply felt. About the Artist: With a profound grasp of the foundational elements of art, Rehfeld's work is a testament to his unmatched prowess and relentless pursuit of excellence in the art world. Born in San Francisco in October 1954, Steven H. Rehfeld embarked on his artistic journey influenced by the diverse cultural backdrop of the Bay Area. Educated at the College of San Mateo and the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he majored in Studio Art, Rehfeld refined his eclectic style, harmoniously blending abstract art with realism. "First and foremost, I go beyond any artist ever," Rehfeld asserts, reflecting his deep understanding of art's foundation, akin to the scientific precision of the periodic table. This comparison underlines his approach to art as a rigorous discipline where each element is as crucial as a chemical compound in a meticulously crafted formula.

"SORCERER'S BISCUIT", painting, surrealist dream, wolf, queen, duality, magic
By Tony Geiger
Located in Toronto, Ontario
SORCERER'S BISCUIT is a new oil on canvas surrealist painting by Brooklyn, New York artist Tony Geiger. It measures 16x20" and is a unique artwork. Note the artist's vocabulary present here – the young girl in early 20th century clothes holding the chewed biscuit; on poles either side of her what looks like a wolf in top hat, and a queen with crown. The wolf and queen are dimensional though appear as garish silhouettes – setting up a duality, a dream, a magic spell... Tony Geiger has said his paintings take you to a certain place, but you have to find your own way back. The world he creates encompasses both classical surrealism and more contemporary concerns. Conflict is usually present. These mischievous juxtapositions make statements on the human condition – either politically, physically or spiritually. Geiger wants the viewer to be challenged and amused by this mixture of the macabre and the playful. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, New York and a longtime NYC resident, Tony Geiger still considers himself a transplanted Californian. He has exhibited paintings at the Sideshow Gallery in Williamsburg, the Barbican Centre in London, England, Miami Projects at Art Basel, Ceres Gallery in Chelsea, NYC, and he was accepted into The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program. Tony Geiger lives in Carroll...
