Lilies
Located in Fairlawn, OH
Jane Peterson (1876-1965) Lilies Oil on canvas, 1952-1953 Signed by the artist lower right: JANE PETERSON (see photo) Painting size: 29 x 23 inches Frame size: 38 x 32-1/2 x 1-1/2 inches Exhibited: The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts: One Hundred and Forty Eighth Exhibition of American Painting and Sculptures, January 25-March 1, 1953 (Photo of original label). Original tacks on stretcher where label was afixed. Label stolen while on exhibition. Exhibited: Childs Gallery, Boston, 2019- 2023 Jane Peterson was an artist who achieved significant critical attention and adulation over the course of her career. Following her first American solo exhibition in 1909, a critic observed, “There is not a dull canvas in the entire collection and everything is interesting”.1 Thirty-five years later, Historical Records published her biography in the almanac Prominent Women of New York.2 Regardless of her success, Peterson remained pragmatic as she always sought to challenge herself with new ideas and techniques. She spent a lifetime immersed in the practice of painting; as a student, teacher, and gifted artist. Peterson was a painter with little interest in self-promotion or the conventional achievements of an artist, as a result there has only been a moderate body of scholarship written about her posthumously. Peterson’s legacy is her brilliant oeuvre of impressionistic paintings, held by collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. "Jennie Christine Peterson was born in Elgin, Illinois in 1876. From an early age Peterson, who was known throughout her life as Jane, showed a natural talent for drawing. As a teenager, having received no formal art training, Peterson sat the art aptitude test conducted by the Pratt Institute. The results were promising and, in 1895, Peterson moved to New York to study at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Peterson thrived at Pratt as a conscientious student, although it was not an easy time for her financially. When her money ran low Peterson gave art lessons to other students, and also earned some income through the sale of her paintings in student exhibitions. When Peterson graduated in 1901, she began working as Drawing Supervisor of Public Schools in Brooklyn. She also continued her art education taking classes at the Art Students League. Between 1904 and 1906 Peterson worked as an art teacher in New York, Massachusetts, and Maryland. In 1907, Peterson sailed to Europe where she visited artists and museums in France, Holland, and Italy. She found Europe to be more socially progressive for women artists and decided to stay and continue her art education. While in Europe, Peterson studied under Frank Brangwyn at the London School of Art, before relocating to Paris where she received instruction from Jacque-Emile Blanche, Charles Cottet, and Claudio Castelucho. Throughout 1908, Peterson was extremely productive, creating many works in her spare time while also taking on portrait commissions to augment her income. She lived in rooms in Montparnasse located around the corner from Gertrude Stein’s salon, where on Saturday evening artists and art enthusiasts would gather to view and discuss Stein’s seminal collection of Modern art. Attending these events Peterson surrounded herself with powerful art luminaries such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, André Derain, and Henri Rousseau. Peterson’s style from this period is neither entirely academic nor avant garde. Rather she blends the technical skills of her academic training with the loose brushwork and bold color palette of her contemporaries to produce paintings that are beautiful impressions of life. Peterson’s early oil paintings from Europe...

My Roses with Peaches
By Teresa Vito
Located in Loveland, CO
My Roses with Peaches by Teresa Vito 20x16" oil Floral Still Life Bouquet of Roses surrounded by a table full of peaches Signed lower right ABOUT THE ARTIST: Teresa Vito's paintings reflect the beauty she sees all around her. She loves painting living energy, whether it is the outdoor landscape, berries and flowers picked for a still life, or the unending variety of the human face. Vito has been a full time oil painter since 1992. She currently lives in Pueblo, Colorado. Vito has won numerous national and regional awards including an Award of Excellence, Best Portrait and Best Still Life Awards from Oil Painters of America. She also received the Best of Show award from the Artists of Colorado Exhibition held at the Colorado History Museum. Teresa Vito grew up in a one store town in upstate New York. She had never met an artist or had gone to an art gallery until she went to college. She chose to major in art because she loved to draw. College offered no clue as to how to become an artist so she decided to try to figure it out on her own. With $250 and a train ticket to Denver (she had never been west of Ohio) carrying a suitcase, a purse and a portfolio of nude drawings, Vito began her artistic journey. During her twenties she did every job she could find that was art related. Vito worked in a frame shop and gallery, at art supply stores, made posters and newspaper advertisements and created display windows in downtown Denver. The year the Art Students League in Denver opened, she maneuvered a job there running a small art supply store. It was here she found out about the world of Artist's Workshops. Vito learned as much as she could looking through the door of the many classes taught by master artists, who were in fact making a living with their art. With this inspiration Vito saved up enough money in 1992 to live cheaply for a year and become a full time artist. She has never looked back and strives to continue to be the best possible painter she can be. She now teaches workshops with gratitude and generosity, to share in all that she has learned. Vito has a BA in Fine Art from the State University of New York at Geneseo and has taught and studied at the Art Students League at Denver and the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts. She has expanded her knowledge by taking numerous workshops over the years with artists Quang Ho, Ramon Kelley...

Harvest Still Life
Located in Loveland, CO
Harvest Still Life by Lu Haskew Oil 18x25" image size, 24x31" framed Still Life of an abundant vegetable garden harvest with onions, eggplant, cabbage and tomato ABOUT THE ARTIST: Lu Haskew 1921-2009 "Life is good to me. Being able to go to my studio five days weekly and paint for several hours, living in a supportive community, having family and friends who encourage me--all have contributed to helping me become an artist. Being fortunate to study with some of the artists I admire has kept me painting from the garden, people and my favorite things. With the support of galleries, teaching and doing demos, how could I do anything else? My goal is to try to be the best I can be by always being a student, looking for new ideas and stretching my horizons." Upon retirement from a 33-year teaching career, Lu rented a studio in Loveland and began concentrating on her oil and watercolor painting. Learning from artists she had followed and admired throughout the years her painting became a full time career. Since 1992, she has studied with renowned painters Richard Schmid, Clyde Aspevig, Joyce Pike, and others at the Scottsdale Art...

"Fishs Eddy Small Jewel Warm"
Located in Scottsdale, AZ
Eve Plumb, actress and artist, has been working in television, and stage since the age of six, and painting steadily for the last 20 years. "Painting is a creative outlet for me when I'm not acting. It gives me a feeling of control over my creative life. An actor often has to wait for projects to come along, but I can paint any time of the day" Self taught, Plumb has been focusing on Still Life for her subject matter "I sometimes call it `spontaneous still life'. Whenever I see a likely subject, everything stops and I take photographs. This holds the moment in time until I can paint it. What I'm trying to do is represent that moment of time and it can be elusive but when you get it right, the sensation it produces can really turn heads and create so much emotion." Ranging in size from 9" x 12" to 30" x 40", the oils on canvas are of tabletop scenes in everyday life. Fruit, coffee cups, and restaurant scenes are represented in the realist style. Eve works out of her home and studio in Laguna Beach, California. Artist Statement I've always loved to paint and draw. For many years I was frustrated by my inability to create what I wanted to see. I worked in watercolors and acrylics for many years, and managed to make a few acrylic paintings I liked well enough to hang on the wall. I kept at it, trying new techniques and talking to other artists I knew. I also tried a paint called casein, which is a milk based paint that allows you to re wet and re work it. I had tried oil, but hadn't had any luck. But I decided to try it again, and this time was able to make a painting I liked. I had no idea how to use it, and in reading books came away with the idea that it's up to you to decide how to use the paint, a medium, like linseed oil, and turpentine. I studied more and became comfortable with the process. Also at this time I was exploring subject matter. I started by using photos from books, and then did a series of paintings that were from 1950's magazines. I love graphic art and magazine ads from the past, and was also collecting vintage items...
