About the Item

A beautiful still life of fruits in a basket set on a table by Ewald Svante Bergh, (1885-1946). Oil on canvas. Bergh was a Swedish painter and a member of the artist group 'De tolv'. At the age of 14 in 1899, he began following the evening courses in decorative painting given at Malmö Technical School and was awarded a scholarship in 1903. He traveled to Dresden where he studied for a period with Albert Petersen. In 1907, he returned to Sweden to work as an assistant to Julius Kronberg in the execution of the decorative paintings at the Royal Dramatic Theatre. Then, he continued his studies with Johan Rohde at Zahrtmann's painting school 1909–1912. During his time at the school, he got to know Sigfrid Ullman and Gösta Adrian Nilsson. After his stay in Copenhagen, he traveled on to Paris. In Paris, Bergh was influenced by Impressionism and later by Cubism. But it was not the expressionists of the young century who gave him impulses, he was more impressed by the French impressionist masters from the 1870s and 1880s. In the present still life, one can see the influences of Paul Cezanne. This came to be reflected in his works over the years. Alongside Johan Johansson, Tora Holmström and Emil Olsson, he belonged to the pioneers of modern painting in Skåne, (South part of Sweden). He introduced a French color scale through his free decorative painting with clear and bright colors. In the end of the 1910s, he got to know Herman Gotthardt, who became one of his patrons for a new stay abroad in 1919–1928, which resulted in studies for André Lhote in Paris 1919–1923. After Paris, the journey went on to Munich and Dachau and after a few years finally to Italy, where he wanted to participate in the wave of classicism and strictness of form that marked the painting of the early 1920s. With the visit to Italy, his earlier impressionist painting was displaced and replaced by a striving towards a firm drawing and closed composition. Before returning home in 1928, he married the Italian Elfrida Aloisi. He had already met her in Dresden, and painted her, and she was to become his favorite model. After the stay in Italy, there were later more painting trips to Spain in 1930, Mallorca in 1931, Paris and the South of France in 1933, Italy and France in 1935, the Rhineland in 1937, Denmark in 1937, Italy in 1938 and finally Switzerland and Italy in 1946. In an exhibition context, he made his debut in 1909 at the 'Skånska' Artists Association's spring exhibition in Malmö. Together with some fellow artists, he exhibited also in Malmö in 1914, where he displayed some paintings done before the trip to Paris and a collection of his French-influenced paintings. The French paintings were seen by some as a breath of fresh air, but they also faced opposition. He participated in group exhibitions with the artist group 'De tolv', which was shown in Malmö. The group got its name after his first performance at the Malmö museum in 1924. From 1939 he belonged to the artist group Aura and from 1939 participated in the group's exhibitions. A memorial exhibition of his art was shown in Malmö in 1946 and at the Royal Art Academy in 1947. At Aura's jubilee exhibition in 1948, he was represented with some works and at 'De tolvs' exhibition in Ystad in 1949. Separately, he made his debut in 1915 in Malmö, where he exhibited ideal light-radiating paintings with impressionist touches. Together with Tora Holmström and Emil Olsson, he exhibited at Lund University's art museum in 1919, where some of his displayed comrade portraits drew attention, as well as landscape paintings from Kullen and Kämpinge. He later exhibited separately in Munich 1924, Florence 1927, Malmö 1935, 1937, 1938 and 1943, Lund 1939 and 1940 and in Stockholm 1940. Bergh is represented at the National Museum in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum, Moderna Museum, Malmö Art Museum and the National Museum in Oslo, Norway and more .
