About the Item
A 19th century oil on wood panel overdoor still life of a tablescape with fruits, presented in a period gilt frame.
A charming cornucopia from the belle époque period when artists were looking back towards 18th century classical style particularly from the Italian school.
This sumptuous and colourful painting could have been a panel from a trumeau (mirror with painted decoration) or from an overdoor as the panel is not flat but chamfered to the reverse edges. Often dining rooms would have panels such as these as decoration representing food or the bounty of the seasons.
A restful painting in muted tones of brown, green, yellow and red. Charming and easy on the eye with its impressionistic rendering. A touch of class to any interior.
From the end of the 16th century, at first in interiors such as the Palazzo Sampieri, Bologna, where Annibale Carracci provided overdoor paintings, they developed into a minor genre of their own, in which the trompe-l'œil representations of stone bas-reliefs, fruit or vases of flowers, in which Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer specialized, were heightened by sotto in su perspective, in which the light was often painted to reproduce the light, diffused from below, that was entering the room from its windows. Overdoors of such flower pieces, allegorical subjects, and landscapes were favoured through the end of the 18th century. French, Dutch and Flemish animalier artists such as Jean-Baptiste Oudry and Jan Weenix were often commissioned to paint sets of overdoors with groups of live or dead game and dogs for country houses or hunting lodges.

Widely known for painting expansive views of the Hudson Valley where the artist often embarks on extensive hiking trails, Konigsberg also takes to painting more intimate and commonplace household objects. A coffee pot, salt and pepper shaker, or as in this case, a simple bouquet of long stemmed pink peonies careening over the side of a green vase; his use of oil washes capture both fluidity and structure. The fanciful treatment of the flowers calls to mind French Impressionist Toulouse Latrec...Category
