A French Impressionist view of an interior, oil on canvas, by Theo Arpen. The painting is signed bottom right and dated. Presented in a carved and gilt wood frame.
A very charming and atmospheric interior view, a vase of flowers sitting on a pink and white fringed tablecloth. The light in the room suffused by fine sheer curtains at the window. In the background an oil painting hangs on the wall and by its side a fine piece of highly polished furniture. The artist has used a fine and accomplished technique, strong but quick brushstrokes to create a fine Impressionist painting. As the work was painted in 1917 it may also reflect the political and social realities of the time, a period of turbulence coming to an end, light at the end of a tunnel, peace and beauty in the future.
A beautiful interior scene following in the tradition of Alexandre Serebriakoff, Stanislav Zhukovsky, Walter Gay and Paul Hugues. This type of genre painting was very characteristic of the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. One of its main exponents was the American Walter Gay. This work has much of the feeling of Gay's painting in style and subject matter.
It is also similar in style to the later works of the French artist Paul Hugues.
