About the Item

Mid Century Italian still life tablescape by Italian artist Fulvio Pendini. The painting is signed bottom right and is presented in a period gilt wood and cloth frame under glass. The stretcher has 'keys' and is stamped for 'Padova' in Italy. A wonderful colourful and vibrant composition of a group of lamps and egg baskets arranged on a table. Great use of colour, light and shade. Pendini gives these mundane objects a fantastic sculptural significance, tightly grouped, with blocks of colour to the table top and background. A very successful and confident composition beautifully executed. Fulvio Pendini spent his childhood inspired by his painter father and from an early age he began to fill notebooks with drawings and colours. After graduating from the Selvatico School, he then attended the courses of the Venice Academy. After his military service in 1934, he married Cesarina Bressan, who would be his lifelong companion. Called up for the Second World War, on his return he had to take on many jobs, but without straying from the field of drawing and painting that he was so fond of, including the design to replace the damaged houses for post-war reconstruction. He decorated the trade fair pavilion, which was visited by the King, and became increasingly involved in the decoration of churches and public buildings. This is how he met Cesare Laurenti, Gino Severini and Giò Ponti; these last two were the architects of a revival which Pendini wholeheartedly supported. In 1946 he founded the club "il coccodrillo" (the crocodile), which takes its name from a bar in Piazza Cavour and is a meeting place for many Paduan artists. Having achieved a certain celebrity, he received numerous commissions from public offices. There is a large fresco at the police headquarters, one at the prefecture, at the university in the Sottoportico and inside, in the Galleria Santa Lucia, as well as various Paduan palaces, the Banca Antoniana, the Church of the Carmine (glass) à la Guizza (leaded glass) and Caffè Pedrocchi (frescoes on the loggias).
