About the Item

This late 19th-century English School watercolour depicts an array of flora nestled into a mossy bank, together with a bird’s nest and two baskets. Late 19th-century English still life painters, such as the Clare family, had a skill for capturing nature’s bounty with finesse. George Clare (1835-1890), for example, would forage through hedgerows for inspiration and his works evoke a gentle walk through the English countryside. This piece, signed E H Stannard in the lower right, references Eloise Harriet Stannard (1829-1915), the Norwich-based artist. However, we feel that it’s closer to the work of George Clare’s son, Vincent Clare (1855-1930). Either way, it’s a charming portrayal. Held in a later frame.
