About the Item
English Still Life Floral Display with Daffodils
by Henry George Moon (British 1857-1905)
on linen canvas, unstretched, unframed, unsigned
measurements: canvas 10 x 12 inches
provenance: from the artists estate
Condition report: Colours good, canvas not cut straight so the image size which may result from it being stretched onto a small frame would be approximately 8.5 x 10 inches. Paint somewhat sketchy and sparse in areas of the background and the green leaf foliage.
Nicely executed still life which came along to us with good quality nudes and watercolours by this artist. Charming little oil which deserves a little frame.
Henry George Moon, born in Barnet, England 1857. Moon developed his love for art at school and studied at the Birbeck and St Martins schools of art. Joining the art department of The Garden publication in 1880, Moon became their illustrator for many botanical and horticultural plates, he also painted for other publications including The English Flower Garden, and enjoyed landscape painting in his own spare time. Many of his landscapes were produced in the last twenty years of the 19th century, when he was greatly influenced by the work of American artist William Edward Norton.
Four years (1885-1889) were dedicated to illustrating a great deal of Reichenbachia (orchid studies) for H F C Sander, printing plates from Moon's woodcut etchings. His name remains foremost among highly acclaimed botanical painters of the time.
William Robinson particularly liked Moon's landscape work "I often thought that if less of his work had been given to plant drawing, how much better it would have been for landscape art".
Moon remained a respected art critic, enjoying involvement among London sketching clubs (the Birbeck, the Gilbert Garrett etc), but after many years of frail health he died at just 48 in 1905.

'Midnight Roses'
Acrylic and plaster paste on canvas
71x91 cm
First the canvas is primed with gesso, and several layers of the base coat are applied. When I am satisfied that there is enough depth to the colour, I start to sculpt the actual roses onto the painted canvas using a flexible plaster paste. The sculpted roses are then primed individually with gesso and painted with high-quality, heavy-body acrylic paint. The resulting relief has a highly 3-dimensional feel.
I am a lover of the old English roses...

Skull, Original Signed Contemporary Black and Green Acrylic Painting on Canvas

Skull, Original Signed Contemporary Black and Green Painting
18" x 18" x 0.75" (HxWxD) Acrylic on Canvas
Hand-signed by the artist. Finished with a gloss varnish.
A black background allows the subject matter of this acrylic painting by artist Lindsay Hall, a human skull, to both pop forward and recede into the background. There is an amount of chiaroscuro happening on the left side of the skull, keeping it in shadow, falling into the depths. An item in a cabinet of curiosities, this memento mori work serves as a pausing point to sit and reflect on one's own mortality. The green tones to the white of the skull give this work an interesting dimensionality to it, almost imbuing it with life, ironically. The black background is reminiscent of artists like Caravaggio and the subject matter is highly reminiscent of Van Gogh's Skull of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette.
Artist Commentary:
I painted this when I lived in Richmond, VA above an oddities shop. Being in such close proximity to various curiosities like taxidermied animals, preserved animal organs, coffins, and the like definitely kept my mind in the spooky mood all year round. The building itself was black and had a giant grim reaper...
