Wonderful vibrant fauvist mid century modern still-life of a plate with grapes and bananas by California artist Virginia Sevier Rogers (American, 1917-2015) c.1960. This mid-century modern piece uses a bright and colorful fauvist color palette, with thick impasto to add texture and depth.
Unsigned. From a collection of the artist's work.
Displayed in a modern gold toned frame.
Board size: 12"H x 16"W.
Rogers was born in Fort Collins, Colorado and studied with Hugh Breckenridge at the PAFA in 1934 and then earned a B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina and her M.A. at UC Berkeley. While in Berkeley, Rogers pursued her art career and in 1971 she moved to the Monterey Peninsula. Member of the Society of Western Artists, Artists Equity. From the Estate of Virginia Sevier Rogers.

- Condition:Painting surface is very good to excellent condition. Contemporary giltwood frame is very good and included as-is. Corner mitres are not perfectly flush.

Virginia Sevier Rogers
Virginia Sevier Rogers studied with Hugh Breckenridge at the PAFA in 1934 and then earned a BA degree from the University of North Carolina and her MA at UC Berkeley. From the early 1940s, she was the wife of a naval officer and living in Shanghai and other places. Rogers returned to Berkeley in 1950 and had an active art career. In 1971, she moved to the Monterey Peninsula and purchased a farm on Carmel Valley Road. At her studio, Rogers taught small classes and produced paintings, batik, pottery, sculpture and a line of note cards on handmade paper.

This painting while clearly figurative bears the influence of the emerging Abstract expressionist movement. Janet Ament De La Roche was born in Hollywood, CA on December 31, 1916. Janet first studied in Los Angeles at Otis and Chouinard art institutes. While studying at Jepson Art Institute in 1947, she met and soon married artist, Victor Di Gesu. Janet de La Roche was often called one of the last Bohemians. She was an artist as well as an avid Flamenco dancer. The couple spent four years in Europe and further studied in Paris at Académie de la Grande Chaumière and Andre Lhote Institute, and in Barcelona at Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Jorge .She also studied with the artist, Ejnar Hansen. as well as with Earl Kerkam, Yves Brayer, Jean Aujame, Edouard Goerg, F.Tolles Chamberlin and George Stanley. Upon returning to California in 1956, they settled on the Monterey Peninsula and built a home in Pacific Grove. She exhibited widely and with much success, including at the Salon d'Automne (1954), the Salon des Artes Decoratifs, Museum of Modern Art, Paris, (1955), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She was the winner of the Prix Othon Friesz.
