About the Item

Wonderful early 20th century still life of a Japanese Shisa (lion/dog), a floral design vase and a brass coffee pot by Wilfred A. Readio (American, 1895-1961), 1920. Signed "Wilfred A. Readio" '20 (1920) lower right. Displayed in a period (repainted) giltwood frame. Image, 18"H x 21.5"W. Readio was active/lived in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. He earned his B.A. at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and studied under Arthur Watson Sparks and A.V. Churchill. He went on to become a member of the facultly and was founder of American Industrial Design Department. There, he was also on the faculty in the Department of Painting and Design. This department was renamed the Department of Pictorial Design in 1944 and Wilfred Readio was appointed the Acting Chairman of the faculty. As the Academic Drawing teacher, Andy Warhol was one of his students. Worhol used blotting technique. The fact remains, however, that Warhol was familiar with this technique due to his Carnegie Tech professors - Wilfred Readio and Robert Lepper - who taught blotting to their students for the illustration of poems and short stories. In addition to teaching at Carnegie Institute of Technology, Readio taught in the Pittsburgh public schools, Latrobe, PA HIgh School, and Pennsylvania State College. Wilfred A.Readio was known as a painter, a lithographer and an educator and specialised in scenes of Pittsburgh and the American West.
