In this trompe-l'œil oil painting, "Still Life with Feather and Leaves", Willard Dixon realistically recreates images of everyday objects taped to a white wall, creating a minimalistic impression that the objects exist in three dimensions. As with his other series'—landscape, skyscape and still life—Dixon’s signature calm and humble approach is paramount. This piece exhibits a certain wit, perhaps due to the unassuming objects represented, feather and leaves. The paintings is a study in form and color, with mysteries for the viewer to unravel while enjoying these optical illusions that truly “fool the eye.”
Willard Dixon’s art has been shown extensively in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York, He has had over 40 one-man shows and numerous group shows. His work is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, The SFMOMA, and the Oakland Museum of California Art. He has executed large-scale commissions for The California Supreme Court, The Oakland Museum and The Las Vegas Federal Courthouse. He received an NEA Fellowship Grant in 1989. In 2013, one of his portraits was included in The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.
