The Life Lesson, Painting, Acrylic on Canvas
By Amy Bernays
Located in Yardley, PA
Somehow it is easier to overpopulate a little painting and get away with it that in a big canvas. This little painting is crowded with life. The menagerie is my daughter’s depiction of her world, the animals within it. It is blued together with the depiction of a small crowd of children looking at the precious thing. We can half make out their forms. Still a little undefined, as things are when you are only half grown up. I like to paint the happy in life. Looking for those thoughts or moments that bring me joy and define my life. I paint my children. Not just their visage, but their being. Their play, their imaginative world as well as their real world. In this series I have the kids paint...

Between the Bite and the Beak, Painting, Acrylic on Canvas
By Amy Bernays

I love to peer into boyhood. Like an intrepid anthropologist, I pull back the curtains of imaginative play and look into their world of makeshift slingshots and make believe war. The ferocious bite of his dinosaurs, informed by playtime with a little friend and a pet chicken. I like to paint the happy in life. Looking for those thoughts or moments that bring me joy and define my life. I paint my children. Not just their visage, but their being. Their play, their imaginative world as well as their real world. In this series I have the kids paint...

The Two of Us, Painting, Acrylic on Canvas
By Amy Bernays

This is part of a series of work I do in duet with my children’s paintings. My process with painting is to ruminate on life. Childhood is both the present, and the ghosts; I see memories of my own childhood. I want to inhabit their strong imaginations, bursting into our experience. Blurring the line between real and imaginary. This is my little girl and her dragon. Her work is more about texture and form than his. Even though it is his subject, the feminine is throughout. I love being her mum...

Trompe l'oeil [Punch and Judy].

Trompe l'oeil. [Punch and Judy]. Watercolor and drawing, undated, circa 1830. Paper size 10.25 x 14" (26.1 x 35.6 cm). On "J. Whatman" watermarked paper. Unidentified artist. A 19th-century visual montage of Cruikshank's "Punch & Judy." The images are taken from the book "The Tragical Comedy, or Comical Tragedy of Punch and Judy." As told to John Payne Collier by Giovanni in 1827, illustrated by George Cruikshank and published by S. Prowlett, London 1828. The central circle illustrates a drawing showing two allegorical female figures with two putti. The text under this image: “E Musao Hugonis Howard Armig, from Guercino.” On top of that illustration is a handsome painting of a flintlock pistol. Trompe l’oeil is an art of illustration – the name translates to ‘Trick of the Eye.” The puppet show of Pulcinella or Punch and Judy has a long and fascinating history. “A puppet play that would have featured a version of Punch was first recorded in England in May 1662 by the diarist Samuel Pepys. He noted seeing it in Covent Garden, London, performed by the Italian puppet showman Pietro Gimonde from Bologna, otherwise known as Signor Bologna. The earliest script of a Punch and Judy show...
