About the Item

Flemish school of the first half of the 17th century Theodoor van Thulden (Bois-Le-Duc, 1606 - 1669), attributable Aeneas receives the weapons given to him by Venus About 1640. oil painting on canvas h.75 x 72 cm. - in frame h.92 x 80 cm. The elegant work proposed stages an episode taken from mythology, precisely from book VIII of the Aeneid, which sees the hero Aeneas, accompanied by his faithful companion Acate, receiving divine weapons from his mother Venus, including his famous shield, forged for him by Vulcan. The work, attributable to the hand of Theodor van Thulden (1606 - 1669), perfectly expresses the characters of his refined production, mainly inspired by Pietro Paolo Rubens, but at the same time well balanced with his knowledge of Italian models, Titianesque in particular. We know that Van Thulden, first a pupil in Antwerp of Abraham van Blijenberch, a renowned portraitist previously active in London as a court painter for King James I, later became a pupil and therefore a close collaborator of Peter Paul Rubens, facilitated by his marriage to Maria van Balen, daughter of the painter Hendrik van Balen and goddaughter of Rubens. As we can see from the beautiful composition we are examining, with its soft modeling and narrative elegance, Van Thulden's painting stands out for the strong influence it absorbed during his stays in Antwerp. One immediately perceives his adhesion, both in the compositional choices and in the stylistic characters, to the ways of the master Rubens, without however possessing the same strength, but more inclined to Classicism and preferring the grace and sinuosity of the figures to power. Our painting is presumed to be dated around 1640, a time when the Flemish influence receives a pleasant mix with the Venetian one. Among the other works of this period, we can mention by way of comparison the Perseus and Andromeda of 1646, of the Musée des Beaux of Nancy, in which the tension of the pose of the figure of Perseus dressed in a classical way is a remarkable parallel with the current figure of Aeneas. The canvas is in excellent condition, with a gilded frame, not coeval. The work, like all our objects, is accompanied by a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law (FIMA).
