Pablo Simunovic
Contemporary Oil on Canvas Interior Scene with Red Stool and Chairs Painting

2020

About the Item

This contemporary oil painting featuring interior scene and vignette on rectangular linen canvas is part of a series called "Ausencia" in Spanish, the artist's native language, translated "Absence". The artist returns to painting after leaving it to devote himself to sculpture. Through these artworks, full of mixed emotions and feelings, born during a period of isolation during the lockdown, Pablo experiments on canvas the theme of loneliness, waiting and time that expands into a feeling of precariousness and emptiness but the artist seems to have immediately evoked also an ancient and romantic intention of comfort, inviting the viewer to feel that the eyes recognize a familiar memory. In each of these works time seems suspended, everyday objects - to symbolize our shelter- are inserted in an interior but imaginative space outlined around the objects in the foreground with a skilful play of colors juxtapositions, shades of warm and cold colors, shadows and lights and intense and material brushstrokes which give the artworks both a spatial and interior depth of perspective. In this oil painting on canvas, a bright red stool focuses the attention, the warmth of worn chairs - companions in convivial situations- is unexpectedly dramatic against the stark black wall while the light seems to enter from an imaginary window at the top left of the painting which, with its beam, brings out a green chair from the shadow. These seating pieces - each different from the other- absorb the memory of those who passed through that room, laughter, friends' gatherings, family lunches, sweet memories. This oil on canvas painting is the historical memory of a past not yet past, feelings and situations in which we are still immersed in waiting to fill that absence. Pablo Simunovic’s painted interiors are inhabited by singular objects, and are vacant of human presence save the reminders in the painted surfaces, worn floor boards or a work table softened by use. Simunovic’s humble interiors, lushly described in oil paint, depict the well-loved surfaces of our home, studio or our favorite place or cafe to entertain ourselves with friends, relatives and loved ones in a tender and devoted manner. The artist personally puts the pure linen canvases on a wooden frame, prepares them with chalk and on this surface begins to paint with oil colors. The paintings are intentionally proposed unframed but a frame can be ordered and customized upon request. Short artist’s biographical note Pablo Simunovic was born in Buenos Aires (Argentina) in 1974. He began to draw very young, at the age-child, self-taught. At the age of fourteen he began to attend the Institute of Design "Ricardo Rojas” in Buenos Aires, until the age of eighteen. He moved in 1999 to the United States, in Miami, and here is the crucial meeting for its formation, with the painter Abdon Romero, a Venezuelan painter, director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Maracaibo. In the atelier of Romero, directed together with the painter Sonia Hidalgo, Pablo Simunovic continues his artistic journey, practicing with the practice of drawing, and gains a clear and sure sign in the realization of the shapes and volumes. Currently Pablo lives and works between Florence and Pietrasanta, from painting he approached sculpture by working different materials from marble to bronze, his passion for sculpture often leads him to Pietrasanta, a privileged place for sculptors where he finds inspiration, materials and foundries to create his works of art.

  • Oil on Canvas Painting Portrait of the Italian Noble Family of Zanardi Count
    By Lucia Casalini Torelli
    Located in Firenze, IT
This museum quality old master oil on canvas formal portrait painting depicting the family of the Count Zanardi is signed by the artist- the female painter Lucia Casalini Torelli- and published in a book dedicated to Casalini Torelli’s workshop and academy. This palatial masterpiece artwork comes directly from the ancient Villa Maraini Guerrieri - Palidano di Gonzaga (Mantua), an historic Italian heritage building owned by the descendants of the family portrayed for more than two centuries, until 1998. The big scale of this oil on canvas masterpiece painting states the relevance of Lucia Casalini Torelli as a painter. The present artwork is a formal family portrait painting that aim to introduce the characters depicted according to their social role in the society. The noble family is all gathered under a loggia overlooking a park, the landscape in the background is partially covered by a beautiful red cloth on the right side. The father stands up and holds the hand of his eldest son, proudly introducing his future heir. The son wears a light-blue dress and red boots, he is depicted in a serious pose holding a black tricorn hat under his arm and a rapier sword on his belt. The mother wears an elegant gold and dark green brocade dress, she is sitting with her youngest daughter on her knees while her second son is by her side. The little daughter wears a lovely long red and dress with white lace and holds an apple on her hand. The son stands next to his mother and is dressed in a brown priestly clothes. This palatial old masters piece was probably painted in 1740 due to the similarities with Cardinal Doria’ s portrait, now on display at the Doria Palace Museum, the official residence of the Prince of Genoa. The painting features original canvas (“prima tela”) and antique original patina, it is in excellent overall condition considering the age, use and its large scale. A formal detailed condition report and the results of the inspection with the UV lamp accompanied by photos is available on request. As well as for its exceptional quality and quite perfect state of conservation, this painting is particularly important and even more valuable both for the artist who painted it and for its absolutely exclusive provenance. Lucia painted the most prominent and powerful noble families of her time, the location of these paintings is unknown to the art market as it is extremely likely that the portraits are still kept in private collections. Furthermore, Lucia was one of the most appreciated artists of her time, so important that she was admitted as a member of the academy at a time when women were forbidden to attend these studies. In 1706, Felice Torelli...
