About the Item

The Holy Family Tuscan school, 17th-18th century Oil on panel 30 x 24 cm In frame 41 x 33 cm This pleasant devotional painting, commonly referred to as “The Holy Family”, depicts the Virgin Mary, with a serene expression and a hint of shyness, tenderly holding the Child in her arms, who is resting on a cushion. The child exudes childlike liveliness, with his head turned away and a lively smile on his face, while Joseph, in the shadows on the right, watches protectively over the scene, which is highlighted by the dark background, emphasising the vividness of the ethereal flesh tones and the soft drapery of the garments. The character of the painting, as well as the quality of the brushwork and the balance of the composition, are elements that lead us to identify its stylistic origins in the refined figurative culture of Tuscany, particularly Florence, with echoes of the Renaissance. The softness of the flesh tones, the idealisation of the refined figures, and even the physical features of the three individual figures bring to mind the Marian works of Del Sarto, Rosso Fiorentino, Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio and, above all, Domenico Puligo. We are therefore faced with a painter who, although active between the 17th and 18th centuries, was strongly inspired by this erudite and refined culture and who must necessarily have studied the creations of these masters, before proposing a similar but unique version, rather than a mere copy of already famous works. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work is sold complete with a gilded wooden frame and comes with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic card. We take care of and organise the transport of purchased works, both in Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers. It is also possible to view the painting in our gallery in Riva del Garda, where we will be delighted to welcome you and show you our collection of works. Holy Family St John Scarsella Paint 17th Century Oil on table Old master Italy
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Ippolito Scarsella, known as Lo Scarsellino (Ferrara, c. 1550 - 1620) workshop Holy Family with the Infant St John oil on arched panel 46 x 29 cm. in a small temple frame 75 x 55 cm This interesting work shows us one of the most sought-after iconographic subjects in the Christian tradition, presented here according to an ancient and proven scheme. We see the Virgin, majestic, in the centre of the scene while holding a chubby child, who is offering a small bird to the young St John (tradition has it that it is a goldfinch, one of the symbols of the passion of Christ) to be caressed. Completing the Holy Family, we can see Saint Joseph in the shadows, apart from the loving everyday scene depicted in the foreground, calmly leaning on his walking stick. Regarding the stylistic characteristics of this small panel, it is easy to recognise the influence of 16th and 17th century Emilian painting, which leads us to confirm its traditional attribution to Ippolito Scarsella (circa 1550 - 1620) from Ferrara, undoubtedly one of the most important artists of this pictorial context. It could very well be a trial sketch...

Madonna Maria Piola Paint Oil on canvas 17/18th Century Old master Religious
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Anton Maria Piola (Genoa, 1654 - 1715) circle Madonna and Child Genoese school of the second half of the 17th century Oil on canvas 93 x 74 cm.- In antique frame 110 x 92 cm. (Work with expertise by Dr. Arabella Cifani) In the pleasing work proposed, depicting a classical Nativity scene, the Madonna is immortalised in adoration as she gently holds the sheet on which the Child is lying, with a gesture of protection and pride that facilitates an atmosphere of intimate recollection, in addition to the presence of three cherubs at the top. The stylistic analysis of the canvas can easily be traced back to a painter of the Genoese school and active during the 17th century, specifically with the devotional works from the workshop of Domenico Piola (Genoa, 1627-1703), an absolute protagonist of Genoese Baroque culture. Piola was the owner of the most important city painting workshop of the time, known as 'Casa Piola', where his sons Paolo Gerolamo and Anton Maria also collaborated. His production, which specialised in a type of highly decorative, profane and allegorical paintings, destined for the decoration of Genoese patrician palaces, also included a refined series of works of a religious nature. In particular, the style of our beautiful breast painting...
