Inspiration for this painting came from the gardens at Great Dixter in East Sussex. The tulips are represented en masse as repetitive, upright forms. The rich colours evoke the exotic profusion of spring flowers that fill the borders at Great Dixter. The colour contrasting with the subtle layering of tonal colour and rhythmical gestural application of illustrative marks.
