Street Awning, 1963 by William Clutz Abstracted Figurative Oil Painting of Passers-by in New York City 30" X 25" oil on linen 31 x 26 x 1.5 inches framed This oil on canvas, impressionistic city-scape painting was made in 1963 by William Clutz. The abstracted figures highlighted in pink, blue and kelly green are pedestrians on the sidewalk in New York City. What is perhaps most striking about Clutz's depictions of everyday, commonplace activity is how he magnifies and glorifies the subject with magnificent sunlight. Pops of color are repeasted at various points on the canvas, keeping the eye endlessly intrigued. This work straddles the artist's personal interest and commercial trends of abstraction in painting, while also rooting the looseness and obscurity in a shape that is clearly a figure on a street in a busy city. In New York, abstract expressionism was the orthodox approach to art at the time in the early 50's and 60's. However, Clutz was committed to his personal style that focused on abstracted human figures within urban tableaux. Working in a context of artists who challenged abstract expressionism's popularity in New York, Clutz established himself as a significant proponent of abstract figuration. His paintings focus on human figures within the urban environment, often exposing the transfiguration of his subjects as they travel through the complex light of city streets or summer parks. Clutz's interest in working from direct observation of urban life was influenced by a long-standing interest in German Expressionism, as well as artists like Henri Matisse, Arshile Gorky, and Nicholas De Stael, and also Albert Ryder's series of reductive seascapes. About the Artist: Renowned as the “impressionist of the contemporary metropolis”, William Clutz uses the city, in its entirety, as his subject. Pedestrians crossing streets become stars of the stage; the hustle and bustle of traffic and surrounding buildings are the chorus; each play their part in the overall composition. Lighting and color shift this observation of the everyday into a remarkable wonder. “It is surely Clutz”, wrote Gerrit Henry in Art News, 1979, “an artist who has rejected the niceties of representation in favor of the quintessence.” The young artist moved to New York City in 1955 and just four years later had his first solo exhibit at the Condon Riley Gallery. Clutz went on to show in major uptown galleries such as David Herbert, where, notably in 1962 he received a NYTimes review titled, Return of the Figure. That same year, his role in the revival of figuration was further solidified with inclusion in the MoMA group show, Recent Painting USA, The Figure. This was a pivotal turning point from which emerged a 50-year exhibiting career. About the Artist: William Clutz was born 1933 in Gettysburg PA, and grew up in Mercersburg, PA. He studied at Mercersburg Academy and the University of Iowa where he received his BA in Painting. Clutz was a Manhattan resident from 1955-1996. Clutz is known for urban paintings, pastels, and charcoal drawings of pedestrians in light. Recognized as a significant proponent of abstract figuration in the renewed interest in figuration of the late 50’s and 60’s in such exhibitions as “Recent Drawings, USA”, 1956 and “Recent Paintings USA, the Figure,” 1962 at MOMA, “The Emerging Figure”, Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Texas, 1960 and “The Figure International” at the American Federation of Arts, 1963. Since his first solo show in 1959 in New York, Clutz has exhibited regularly in New York City and been represented by these well-known New York City Galleries--Katharina Rich Perlow, Tatistcheff, Alonzo, Graham, Brooke Alexander, Bertha Schaefer, and David Herbert. Clutz has also had solo exhibitions at Triangle Gallery San Francisco, Tatischeff/Rogers in Los Angeles, John C. Stoller Minneapolis, and Walther Rathenau Saal in Berlin, Germany. Clutz taught painting and drawing at Parsons the New School for Design from 1970-1992. Significant works by Clutz are included in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Washington DC, The Newark Museum NJ, Dayton Art Institute OH, Museum of Modern Art NY, Metropolitan Museum of Art NY, Museum of the City of New York NY, Corcoran Gallery of Art DC, Washington County Museum MD, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum NY, Mercersburg Academy PA, Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University MA, and many corporate collections such as Chase Manhattan Bank NY, Bradley Family Foundation WI, McKinsey and Company NY, Mobil Corporation VA, Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance MN and many others.
