Anesthesia - underwater photograph from series REFLECTIONS - acrylic 36x54"

2018

About the Item

“Anesthesia” is a part of Alex Sher’s popular series REFLECTIONS - underwater photographs that could be almost mistaken for abstract paintings as they bring up recollections of masterpieces by Picasso, Dali or Gustav Klimt. In fact REFLECTIONS are straight photographic capturing of the water’s surface from below, with a submerged underwater camera. The photographs freeze natural momentary reflections in water surface - the unique kaleidoscopic fragmentations of human body into nearly unrecognizable forms. It is these bold accents of color, mesmerizing textures, dramatic lines, and distinctive distortions that make Sher’s works unique highly advisable masterpieces. Lost in a sea of rich saturation of dark and light blue colors, a feminine form gracefully traverses the expanse of the water. Alex Sher’s “Anesthesia” invites us into an abstracted alternate reality, the other side of the mirror. As if we were immersed in an aquatic version of Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night”, Sher’s photography masterfully captures a beautiful magical underwater world where rapidly releasing bubbles mirror the cosmos. Calm in her stride, we are left disoriented; does she glide above us or is she trapped below? Original gallery quality archival pigment print face mounted to 1/4" museum grade acrylic plate backed with 1/8" dibond and hidden frame. Limited edition of 12. The artwork is furnished with certificate of authenticity, signed by artist with artist's name, edition number, edition limit, and other details. The artwork needs no framing; it is being hung by a hidden frame on the back. Additional framing is available upon request. The strength and patience of the feminine form resound in the echoing smile of Alex Sher’s disciplined model in his underwater photograph “Surprise”. The female body becomes almost unrecognizable as the nude colors of the skin, the vivacious reds of the garments, and the tranquil blues of the water morph and fuse into one another. Computers. any error, malfunction, or problem. 3. a brief or sudden interruption or surge in voltage in an electric circuit. STORM is almost the antithesis of what we think of as photography, because the end result does not accurately depict what was viewed from the other side of the lens. Taken with an old BlackBerry Storm smartphone, these images were created from what appeared to be a corruption within the device's operating system. After attempting to take more photos and getting the same results, I frustratingly downloaded hundreds of files only to discover frenetic, vibrant, undulating images. The photographs represented are the last of 28 images that still exist today -- the remaining files having degraded to the point where there is no useful color information left. Making a photograph is a painstaking process occasionally made easier with modern photo editing software. But despite our best efforts, sometimes technology just slips up and has its own way, and in this case an unexplainable computer glitch produced a surprisingly delightful result -- if only for a fleeting moment. From the gallerist: I proudly exhibited Les Schmidt's award-winning photography at my New Orleans gallery for years. His work is in notable collections around the world and his exhibitions are always well received by collectors and the press alike. Over the coming months, I will be listing limited edition prints from his diverse portfolio. (PLEASE NOTE: As with many photographic editions, prices rise as prints sell in each edition) BIO Les Schmidt (b. 1960 New Brunswick, NJ) attended the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts from 2003-2004. He has exhibited extensively in the US including Atlanta, GA; Los Angeles, CA; Naples, FL; New Orleans, LA and Cooperstown, NY and internationally in Budapest, Hungary and Crete, Greece.
