From the artist, Chris MaGee: “Recently as I walked the streets of my city, I slowed down and began taking photographs. It was only after considering this constellation of random images that I began to arrange them in sets of three, finding surprising connections within.  “I’ve been drawn to the triptych form before, from Late Medieval altarpieces to Francis Bacon's nightmarish tableaus; but as I began to arrange these images, another inspiration took charge. As a child, the comic strips in daily papers were one of my first exposures to visual culture. Now I had come full circle and found myself creating 3-panel visual journeys.  “Putting one image next to another opens possibilities of time and an implied narrative. And constraining the imagery to black and white allows me to play with negative space, the "ma" fundamental to Japanese ikebana – the form encapsulating its own trinity of heaven, earth and the human as the artist arranges flowers into sculptures celebrating balance, harmony.  “It was the translation of ikebana, roughly "flowers kept alive" that suggested the name of this new series of photo montage prints.” Chris MaGee is a Toronto artist who studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Beginning his artistic career in drawing and painting, his work has branched out to include collage, photography, and text-based pieces. Since 2013 MaGee began incorporating sound into his artistic practice, releasing 10 albums of sound art on the Easy Item Music label. His work has been featured at The Loft Gallery (Toronto, Canada), Hinterhof (Darmstadt, Germany), and Millennium Film Workshop (Brooklyn, NY).
