About the Item

After struggling to decrease my environmental footprint, lumen images gave me a path to create with less impact on the earth. Using organic waste as the subject, the energy of the sun and minimal chemicals, I rediscovered an early photo process that is greener and allows me to recycle my old photo paper. While the subject matter can be limited, the outcome is unexpected. The variables are the seasons, time of day, and the paper. Most images I scan and digitally print. Some of the most surprising results have come from black & white fiber paper that was in storage for 10+ years when I moved to Santa Fe from the East Coast. The sun breaks down the paper and the subject matter. Some images are more representative and others are a reflection of a different point of view, the subject usually recognizable but transformed. This process became deeply meaningful for me as it connected me closely to nature after my sister died unexpectedly and as I struggle with health issues. -- Kelly Cowan
