About the Item
In the early 1970s, color photography was not really considered to be art by any standard. Mitchell Funk is one of the early trailblazers of color photography as fine art. In this 1970 example of an in-camera multiple exposure, Funk interchanges magenta, red, blue yellow and green filters over his base image of the Brooklyn Bridge. The multiple exposures were done on the spot with Kodachrome 2 white Funk shoots and reminded and then shoots again. The Brooklyn Bridge has been an inexhaustible inspiration for artists since its construction over 140 years ago. Mitchell Funk's "Brooklyn Bridge Multiple Exposure in Magenta and Blue of 1970, is somewhat reminiscent of Joseph Stella's futurist paintings of the Brooklyn Bridge. Art history thrives on comparisons yet at the time Funk was only 20 years old and not aware of Stella.
