This close-up of the Chrysler Building Spire in gold light was taken from the roof of a building on 38th Street. Its position gave Photographer Mitchell Funk a perfect line of sight to celebrate the spire's brilliant Art Deco design and sumptuous colors. The cropping of the image walks the razor's edge between abstraction and representation. A setting sun provides a perfect background of warm ochres and soft magentas that seamlessly weaves together the patterns of architecture and nature.

In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.
