About the Item
Most cities have a chaotic visual schema. However, through the lens of veteran Street Photographer Mitchell Funk, anarchy becomes order. In the present work, "Statue of Liberty on a Truck," Funk captures a tableau of colorful horizontal bands on an Upper East Side building. A parked Pepsi truck anchors the banding pattern. In the lower right quadrant, Funk snaps a passing silhouetted Statue of Liberty graphic to fit perfectly into the architectonic composition. Its presence not only forms a stunning urban photograph, but the placement of the Statue of Liberty on a city street is unexpected.

Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.
