Regina Hügli Lychen (Nr. 2/1) 2023 Photogram, framed behind glas 52 x 42 cm (30 x 24 cm) Unique For quite some time now, the photo artist Regina Hügli has occupied herself with water and the phenomenon of arborisation and budding. Regardless of whether bloodstreams or neural pathways, fungal rhizome, coral or, as can be seen in Galerie Reinthaler: lichen. It is the fundamental flow of information and life of all growth that particularly interests Regina Hügli, and which she stages with bright colours against a dark ground in seemingly abstract photograms. In past years, Hügli has worked intensively on the theme of water as the organiser and curator of interdisciplinary group projects. In 2023, she received the Austrian Neptune State Award for Water in the category of art for this work. A part of her latest “Free Genie” project will be shown in the context of the “Crustose” exhibition: second-hand glasses that have been engraved with current brand names and marketing slogans of the bottled water industry, which refer to a spiritual relationship with water. “Free Genie” hopes to liberate these spiritual dimensions of water from the context of commercial appropriation. In the framework of a discussion event in mid-October, guests are invited to consider the experience of drinking local tap water from various glasses with these dimensions and to enter into an exchange on the subject. Regina Hügli’s artistic projects are conceptual and poetic. She explores the qualities of time and space by using experimental techniques and focuses on questions of consciousness and identity in a philosophical context. In the last years she has been focusing on the topic of water in various aspects, thereby working as an organizer and curator of interdisciplinary group projects including both artistic and scientific approaches. Lives and works in Vienna.
