About the Item
Phelps creates staged scenes that resemble film stills. He pairs models with pieces of machinery, motorcycles and found objects in industrial settings. Conscious of costume with dramatic lighting the photographs are surprisingly elegant and surreal. Phelps explores the mystical quality of machines how they relate to its human partner as a means of transport to another world
The invitational image “Gear #2”, a nude holding a large gear portrays the female form as statuesque and strong, making maximum use of shadows, and stylistically nodding to an era gone by. In another image “1952 Vincent Black shadow” is Phelps interpretation of a 1948 photograph featuring Roland Free on the motorcycle he rode to set the land speed record. Phelps’ model lays on a vintage motorcycle as if poised for flight, in an empty field in front of two tall grain elevators.
Using a wooden field camera, Phelps shoots with 8” x 10” Polaroid, mixing black and white with color film to create tonal disparities; the lighter areas look slightly mottled while the darker take on a metallic quality. Large format Polaroid allows Phelps to create what he calls “slim passageway of focus” surrounded by industrial open spaces.
Phelps was introduced to photography while a High School student in St. Paul, MN. and opened his first photography studio in Minneapolis at the age of 21. His passion for motorcycles is evident in this series of photographs, which feature vintage European bikes from a collection Phelps has been building for over 15 years. He has lived in Chicago, Madrid, Sydney, Paris and currently New York. As a commercial photographer some of his photographs have appeared in, GQ, Interview, The New York Times Magazine French Marie Claire and Italian Vogue.

This exhibition is a visual dance of contradictions. Whimsical and sophisticated. Stylistic and simple. Studied and carefree. That’s what emerges when you take a photojournalist by study, fashion photographer by trade and fine artist by instinct and leave him alone with his camera and a muse. Burris’ work is influenced by his early career spent working with fashion photographer Bill King and inspired by the decisive moment made known by the Henri Cartier Bresson. He defies the confines of either discipline. It is not fashion photography, which is by nature produced, but rather purely spontaneous.
Todd left the world of fashion photography after building his own career in Milan and New York to go to LA and find his niche. He embraced his fascination with flea markets and penchant for discarded items that wouldn’t ever be chosen because they were trendy but because they were interesting. Burris packed his 1979 white Pontiac station wagon with his finds. When he came upon a stage that fit the props, he called on his muses and created a visual story on the spur of a moment.
The collection of black and white images conveys a sense of effervescence and Élan. It includes photographs from Burris' time in Los Angeles as well as earlier experimental work in Milan and New York City.
Anything but superficial, the invitational image, "Paget #1" challenges the traditional symmetry of beauty. We see a dramatic close up of a woman’s face, her intense eyes framed by the stark contrast between her porcelain skin and jet black hair. The lighting is such that her face is divided by shadow, one half dark and mysterious, the other half light and classically beautiful. The effect is deeply engaging. The viewer doesn’t know when the photo was taken but you want to know more.

ABOUT:
Inside the gallery, the viewer is surrounded by an arresting display of glamour in the wild. Drawing inspiration from classical paintings and geometric forms, Greg Lotus' work has been compared to Herb Ritts, Man Ray and Richard Avedon, and his exhibition fuses his high fashion background with the rural environment of his youth. Yet Lotus admits to no formal training throughout his career, "I'm completely self-taught, lots of trial and error over the years."
His foray into fashion photography was a twist of fate. In the 90s he was sharing living quarters with young models, and began photographing them to help them build their portfolios—work that eventually brought his work to the attention of agencies. When it comes to his own models, Lotus prefers the "unspoiled" types, holding castings to find those with quirk as well as beauty.
"Over time, most artists develop their own palette and look using color and light in a very personal way. I express my own aesthetic sense which is what makes my work recognizable, regardless of subject or setting." "Swimmer Cap," is an example of Lotus' signature pop of color. Here, a cast of sinewy models convene in a locker room; their candy-colored swim caps give the piece its surreal, dreamlike quality.
In the invitation piece, "Nurses" beauties in black bathing suits pop against a light background while being hosed down by a nurse. "You can almost feel the spray and hear the whoosh under the miniskirt," says Lotus. Besides the visual play on light and dark, he says water is the linking element that turns the piece theatrical and makes it breathe.
Greg Lotus was born in 1967 in rural West Virginia. He shot in Paris and New York City before settling in Miami to pursue his craft. After landing his first major job in Europe, Lotus interviewed with the editor of Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani...
