About the Item

Boy with Tongue Out Spearing Brass Ring, Luxembourg Garden, Paris Titled, dated and stamped with photographer's credit ink stamp and TIME Inc. copyright ink stamp on reverse Silver gelatin print, printed c. 1964 10 x 8 inches Alfred Eisenstaedt’s photograph Boy with Tongue Out Spearing Brass Ring is one of a series of pictures of Paris that the photographer took in 1963 while on assignment for LIFE magazine. The present example is a rare vintage print, made shortly after the photograph was taken, and features original ink stamps on the reverse that credit both the photographer and TIME Inc. Like many early prints that are associated with publishing it was likely made for distribution either internally or to another publication that had syndicated it. Few such prints remain. The majority of the collector’s market for Eisenstaedt’s work centres on the excellent later prints that he made for sale in conjunction with TIME in the 1980s, and so this print should be noted for its historic significance, as well as its remarkable condition.

Boys Smoking, Southam St, N. Kensington, 1956 - Roger Mayne (Black and White)
By Roger Mayne
Located in London, GB
Signed and dated Signed, titled and dated on reverse Silver gelatin print, printed 1998 10 1/2 x 9 inches Roger Mayne (1929-2014) is a British photographer known for his series documenting the children of Southam Street, West London. Influenced as much by the St Ives school of artists as by his photographer contemporaries, Mayne consciously printed with high contrast to emphasise the formal qualities of his work and increased the scale of his prints to pursue a dialogue with contemporary painting. The images which Roger Mayne captured between 1956 and 1961 at Southam Street, London represent the most significant personal and professional project of his career. At that time, Southam Street in North Kensington had changed little since Victorian times and was later declared uninhabitable, making way for Erno...
