About the Item

"The Cure Gets Caught on Columbus Ave., NYC 4/11/80" black and white photograph by Allan Tannenbaum. Image size: 9 x 13 inches. The text reads: "The Cure New York City 1980. In 1978, the Sussex ensemble led by Robert Smith changed its name from Easy Cure to the name that would follow them into the pages of music history - the Cure. Their debut album, 'Three Imaginary Boys' was released in May 1979. Pictured here on Columbus Avenue, the relatively clean-cut looking band had yet to evolve into the extreme Goth for which they became famous. The interesting juxtaposition of this photo was the work of photographer Allan Tannenbaum. Allan found it challenging to photograph bands in the offices of record companies so he asked the band to join him on the street. The passing NYPD officers offered a provocative comparison of the suspicion of authority and the rebellion of youth. Photograph ©2009 by Allan Tannenbaum from the book 'New York in the 70s.'" This photo was previously displayed in the original Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and comes with a certificate of authenticity and a commemorative plaque to that effect.

"Sid Vicious Arrest" black and white photograph by Allan Tannenbaum. Image size: 9 x 13 inches. The text to the right of the photo reads: "Sid Vicious New York City 1978. At about 11 a.m. on October 12, 1978, the desk clerk at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City received a call from outside the hotel. A man, who did not identify himself, told the clerk, 'There's trouble in room 100.' The desk clerk called for an ambulance which arrived with a police escort. After the paramedics confirmed the woman was dead, police checked the room and found drugs and drug paraphernalia as well as a blood-stained Jaguar K-11 folding knife with a five-inch blade and a black jaguar carved into the handle. The couple had registered as Mr. and Mrs. John Ritchie, though they were not married. Simon John Ritchie was the man's real name, better known as Sid Vicious, punk superstar and former bass player for the infamous British band, The Sex Pistols. His deceased companion's name was Nancy Spungen. 'I stabbed her, but I didn't mean to kill her!' He was also heard muttering through his tears, 'She must have fallen...

This photograph was previously displayed in a guest room of the original Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and comes with a certificate of authenticity and commemorative plaque to that effect. Lynn Goldsmith wrote about this image: "The Beatles were coming to Miami to the Deauville Hotel to perform live on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was February 13, 1964. I had turned 16 two days before. My stepfather was in the hotel business and arranged for me to be in the lobby for their arrival. Little did he know I thought the Beatles were too 'goodie-goodie.' I was a Rolling Stones fan. I didn’t want to disappoint him since he thought this would be momentous for me. Besides, I decided it might be worthwhile as I’d never seen the lobby carpet...
