About the Item

This elegant photograph is a classic example of the spirit of artistic collaboration that André Kertész embraced while immersed in the bohemian community of Montparnasse. Kertész emigrated to Paris in 1925, and some of his first connections there were with fellow expats from his native Hungary. This photograph was the result of an invitation from the Hungarian cellist Feri Roth, the leader of a string quartet performing works by modern composers like Ravel and Debussy. Roth would have been aware that, far from taking typical publicity photos, Kertesz would approach the shoot as a creative conversation in its own right. The radical cropping of this image was typical of Kertesz’s working methods at the time. Fascinated with the cubists, he was exploring ways to reduce his subjects to their essence, through a process of abstraction. The tensile geometry of this composition is entirely of a piece with the essential components of the cello: the strings stretched taut over the bridge, creating a vertical thrust that is only interrupted by Roth's bow pulling across them, all of which is emphasized by Kertész's tight crop. Kertész and Roth were among the Jewish artists who sought refuge in the United States in the 1930s, where they both enjoyed long and distinguished careers. This delightful print exemplifies the spirit of Paris between the wars, a period of artistic cross-pollination that was instrumental in shaping Kertesz's creative identity. Kertész himself said this was one of his favorite images from that time in his life. This image measures 9 34 x 2 inches, on a 10 x 8 inch sheet. It is signed and date by the artist on verso, and notated "Paris."

A Train (from the series A Story of the New York Subway)
By Kazuo Sumida
Located in New York, NY
11 x 14 inch gelatin silver print. Edition 15. Signed on verso. Kazuo Sumida first visited New York in 1995. He found the city to be one of “both bustle and silence,” particularly the underground world of the subway, where he encountered “a place full of characters.” By 2002, he had produced a large body of work of images taken in this subterranean metropolis – tender scenes of lovers and children; gritty portraits of beggars for whom the subway is home; artists, musicians, commuters, and others who pass through the tunnels on their daily journeys. The resulting monograph, A Story of the New York Subway, was published in 2002. Sumida was born in 1952 in Kochi Prefecture in southern Japan. Although photography was not his formal career, Sumida has pursued the art throughout his life. He graduated from Osaka Photography Graduate School in 1983, and also studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, on a fellowship from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. He lives in Japan, and continues to visit New York frequently. His work has been shown at the Tokyo Ginza Kodak Photo...
