Jan Saudek
The Dancers, Vintage Gelatin Silver Sepia-Toned Photograph from Prague 1980s

1984

About the Item

The Dancers, 1984 is an 8" x 8" vintage gelatin silver sepia-toned photograph by contemporary Czech artist Jan Saudek. Signed “Jan,” titled and dated “July 20-23, 1985” in ink below the image. Provenance: private collection. “The Dancers” is a celebration of intimacy. Standing apart from Saudek’s surreal and dreamlike works, here the artist documents reality to tell a story about familial bonding of father and child. With no need to show faces for the composition, we experience bodies and a universal embrace. Provenance: Private Collector *** Artist’s Bio: Jan Saudek is a celebrated Czech artist born May, 1935. He is an art photographer and painter. Considered one of the most creative artists in Prague, he made most of his photographs from the 1960s-1990s, with many hand-colored and each a print unique. For Saudek's images shot in his studio and on location, the photographer used the same models for years. Committed to expressing his personal vision, Saudek never stopped celebrating life, liberty, sensuality, and close relationships regardless of the political regime. The artist's works have been included in The Family of Man, 1955 by Edward Steichen, and Saudek is commonly associated with Alfons Mucha, Lewis Carroll, Hans Bellmer, Duane Michals, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The Czech photographer's focus remains on human nature, with the belief that no one escapes his destiny: life, aging, and death are his subjects. Notable works include, The World of Jan Saudek: Photographs; Jan Saudek - Il teatro della vita; Story from Czechoslovakia, My Country; and Photographs by Jan Saudek. Additionally, Saudek's art gained prominence during the 1990s because of his collaboration with the publisher Taschen. *** Available at 99Prints NYC an online art marketplace for today’s collector of contemporary art, works on paper, original and limited edition photography. A camera is a window through which a photographer interacts with the world, and it's up to the operator to decide whether his camera will be a barrier or a mirror between he and his subjects. In the 1970s, Michael Abramson chose the latter path when he brought his camera to Pepper's Hideout on Chicago's South Side. Following in the footsteps of his acknowledged influence Gyula Halász, a Hungarian photographer better known as Brassaï who became the pre-eminent chronicler of the Paris nightlife he loved so much, Abramson initiated himself into the nightlife of Chicago's predominantly black neighbourhoods. He was very much a part of the scene he documented on film, drinking, laughing, and dancing with his subjects into small hours and becoming as much a part of the atmosphere as the locals who frequented the same nightspots he did. - Joe Tangari (Numero Group, 2009) This series won Abramson a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1978 and launched his career as a photojournalist. Eventually the project resulted in a hardbound book, Light: On the South Side, including the Grammy and Mojo nominated album, featuring Chicago blues...

A fan of photography since her early childhood, Mizrakli graduated from Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Interior Decoration Department, and continued her higher education in London, where she started out her work as a photographer. Later on, she moved to New York to further develop her career as a photographer and enrolled in classes at the Photography Department of the New York Film Academy. She received a Master’s Degree in photography in Los Angeles, where she is currently based. Mizrakli has conducted many shooting sessions for Mica Studios and Bullet Magazine in New York and had two solo exhibitions in Los Angeles. She has recently participated in the Contemporary Istanbul Exhibition (November 2013). In some of her black and white works she uses the human body only as a pictorial sign in order to create almost abstract works. First made anonymous, the female model is then cloned and circularly multiplied. The result is a kind of wheel in which the repeated human body gives birth to a new, seemingly vegetal or mineral structure. Thus, the human element seems to be transformed into different other natural...
