Brassaï, (Gyula Halász) Le Presentation, Chez Suzy 1932. Le Presentation, Chez Suzy, ( 1932 ), Brassaï, Original Vintage Silver Gelatin Print. Signed, stamped and numbered on the print verso Brassaï (pseudonym of Gyula Halász; 9 September 1899 – 8 July 1984) was a Hungarian photographer, sculptor, writer, and filmmaker who rose to international fame in France in the 20th century. Brassai photographed the nightlife of Paris during this time. Photograph is 11 3/8 x 8 5/8 inches. Signed, stamped and numbered on the print verso with additional pencil information used as the perfect reproduction print for his monograph – Page 2. Print from the 1970’s. The Provenance of this Brassai photograph is as follows. The print was purchased by a private photographer/collector from the late Lorraine Monk, the Past Head of the National Film Board of Canada, Still Division, The Canadian Museum of Photography and publisher of many photography books like Canada: Year of the Land, Between Friends ( a photo book on the close relationship between Canada and The United States ) along with many other books. Lorraine had many personal friendships with photographers, least of which was Robert Frank. Why is this print special? Because Brassai not only signed the photograph by his hand and put his Paris Studio Stamp, but there is an inscription, “Pg.2”. What this means is that this print was for the printer who would separate the image for inclusion into a Brassai Monograph. Page 2 means that it is one of his best photos and should lead the book and it also means that, by this inscription, it is the best print of this photograph with all the subtleties and tones that would make the best reproduction of his work. Lorraine knew this when she bought the image and she sold it to her close friend / photographer, who currently offers it for sale through the Oliver Gordon Gallery.
