"The Glimmer Twins " is a set of two black-and-white limited edition fine art portraits of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards by Charlie Auringer.
As one of the founders and main photographers of the iconic CREEM Magazine in Detroit, Charlie Auringer spent 17 years on the front line of the rock world, shooting everyone from David Bowie to Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, The Who, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Leon Russel, Miles Davis, and BB King, to name a few. Charlie is also responsible for the design and styling of more than 200 CREEM magazine covers.
ABOUT CHARLIE AURINGER...
Michigan country boy moved to Detroit in 1964 and after seeing the Beatles and Bob Dylan took photography classes at Wayne State.
Hanging out at the local record store/head shop he met some artist and writers with whom he started CREEM in 1969. Shooting local bands, MC-5, Mitch Ryder and national bands at the legendary Grande Ballroom, Olympia Stadium and Cobo Hall, Jeff Beck with Rod Stewart, Elvis and Cream among others. CREEM Magazine went national in 1971 and he photographed David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Rolling Stones, Kiss, Alice Cooper and others while working with rock writers Dave Marsh and Lester Bangs.
Around 1976 he retired his camera for full-time design and photo editing at CREEM where he published the best rock photographers in US and UK. After CREEM folded in 1985 he designed Detroit‘s alternative newspaper, Metro Times until 2003. Currently he designs Big City Blues Magazine.

"It was a press conference at the Dorchester Hotel in London. RCA Records had flown a bunch of American journalists to London in July 1972 to promote David’s upcoming US tour and the release of his Ziggy Stardust album. Iggy and Lou were both working on their new albums, Raw Power and Transformer and were hanging out at the conference.
Even though Iggy and Lou were still basically “underground” artists, and David’s ascent was still in its early days, it was a photo that I really wanted to take. Only later did it become one of the classic rock images. So I hustled them together. The only thing I remember was Lou saying: “This will be a pretty picture!”
When Mick Rock first met David Bowie, he had previously met and photographed both Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, so there was an immediate bond formed...

“Art Shay’s photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head and then kicks you in the ass.”
Roger Ebert
“[Shay’s work] ranks with some of the greats of the 20th century.”
Ellen & Richard Sandor, Renowned photo collectors
“I’ve admired Art Shay’s work for almost forty years, and he keeps getting better. He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.”
William Friedkin, Director of French Connection
“Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.”
Studs Terkel
“Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. I’ve been a fan of his work since the early 1950s - before the launch of playboy magazine.”
Hugh Hefner
“Algren, Terkel, Royko, they gave us a voice. Art Shay gave us a face.”
Tony Fitzpatrick, Chicago Artist
“Art Shay is America’s Cartier-Bresson.”
Thomas Dyja, author of The Third Coast
“Chicago’s Art Shay in many ways is to American photography what Nelson Algren was to American writing: that rare and absolutely necessary citizen who’s blessed with a cold eye, a clear head, and a warm heart. What is it about Chicago that keeps giving us men like this?”
Russell Banks, Novelist
“The best images of Simone de Beauvoir and her times have been passed down to us by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gisele Freund, Robert Doisneau, Georges Brassai, and in America, the Chicago-based Art Shay, all world-class photographers.”
Christophe Loviny, Art Editor, Paris
“Art Shay is the best photo-journalist Chicago ever produced.”
Arthur Siegel, photographer; IIT Institute of Design President
“I have one of Art Shay’s pictures over my desk. It reminds me every morning of my Chicago roots. Arts photos, like me, have the Chicago accent, which may be to say he’s telling you the truth. I think it takes a realist to see the humor in things. I know it takes a realist to see the depths of tragedy. Art’s work is so real it feels like a Madison Street guy tapping me on the forearm.”
