About the Item

Dae-Soo Kim works in Paris and Seoul, while approaching this series with sensitivity and delicacy. In Korea the bamboo plants grow up to 30 meters high, while possessing a high symbolic power and economic value. They have previously been regarded as a model for a pure and humble attitude to life. Working with one of the oldest photographic techniques in a finely differentiated approach, his personal view is supported by the analogue camera. The uniqueness of the bamboo plant is presented through the oblique viewing angles, choosing sections, and examining both frontally and up-close. Black and white films offer a high quality that Dae-Soo Kim is comfortable pushing the limits of, allowing to remain in wonder and careful observation. Gallery 270 represents distinguished photographers of the 20th Century and the emergent photographers of the 21st Century from around the world. We place particular emphasis on modern emerging photographers employing traditional processes such as platinum/palladium, cyanotype, and gum bichromate, where the hand of the artist is much more intimately engaged.

The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado...
