About the Item

Dae-Soo Kim works in Paris and Seoul, while approaching this series with sensitivity and delicacy. In Korea the bamboo plants grow up to 30 meters high, while possessing a high symbolic power and economic value. They have previously been regarded as a model for a pure and humble attitude to life. Working with one of the oldest photographic techniques in a finely differentiated approach, his personal view is supported by the analogue camera. The uniqueness of the bamboo plant is presented through the oblique viewing angles, choosing sections, and examining both frontally and up-close. Black and white films offer a high quality that Dae-Soo Kim is comfortable pushing the limits of, allowing to remain in wonder and careful observation. Gallery 270 represents distinguished photographers of the 20th Century and the emergent photographers of the 21st Century from around the world. We place particular emphasis on modern emerging photographers employing traditional processes such as platinum/palladium, cyanotype, and gum bichromate, where the hand of the artist is much more intimately engaged.

Araki completed his studies at Chiba University’s Department of Photography, Painting and Engineering with a focus on the study of film and photography. His photographic project Satchin earned him the prestigious Taiyo Award in 1964, shortly after he had joined the advertising agency Dentsu, where he worked until 1972. At Dentsu he met his wife Yoko, to whom he paid homage in Sentimental Journey, a photographic record of their honeymoon published in 1971.
