Daido Moriyama (*1938, Japan) is one of the most revered living Japanese photographers. His work is saturated with the melancholic beauty of life at its most ordinary. His photographs epitomize wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in imperfection. Moriyama focuses in on the lost and the discarded, and finds echoes of living through the breakdown of traditional values in post-war Japan.
Daido Moriyama has a self-proclaimed addiction to cities. His later work still shares the same inclination to record his surroundings as his earliest pictures, taken during the dramatic transformation of 1960s post-war Japan. Moriyama used his camera to document the American military occupation of his country and the dissolution of traditional values experienced alongside accelerated modernization. In a process he maintains today, Moriyama shot with a small hand-held automatic camera, rarely with attention to the viewfinder (firing his shutter as if by machine gun.) In his depictions of city life, Moriyama documents cultural change and chaotic urban experience, typically in grainy, black-and-white, high-contrast images, which he prints himself.
'Moriyama is an expressionist: he possesses a dark, intense eroticism and an appreciation for the tragic. He understands the conflicts in Japanese society – between acceptance of western culture and the quest for a separate Japanese identity, between acceptance of modernity and admiration for traditional ritual and custom. … It was Moriyama's gift to infuse the commonplace, populist appreciation of what he found on the street with a foreboding energy, to fuse… conventional society and the powerful undercurrent of the forbidden – and do it in the language of the everyday.' – Sandra Philips

Daido Moriyama
Daido Moriyama (b. 1938) is a renowned Japanese photographer celebrated for his raw, grainy, and high-contrast black-and-white images that capture the gritty, chaotic energy of post-war urban life in Japan. Born in Osaka, Moriyama began his career as a graphic designer before turning to photography in the 1960s, influenced by the avant-garde Provoke movement, which sought to challenge traditional notions of photography with an expressive, unpolished style. Moriyama's work often focuses on the darker side of city life, portraying fleeting moments of alienation, desire, and transience in Tokyo’s streets. His iconic series, Farewell Photography (1972), and his book Shashin yo Sayonara, pushed the boundaries of photographic convention, using blurred, out-of-focus images to evoke the fragmented nature of memory and modern existence. His career has spanned over six decades, and he remains a vital figure in contemporary photography, inspiring generations with his provocative and innovative approach to capturing urban reality.

Nobuyoshi Araki (Tokyo, 1940) is a Tokyo-based photographer. Araki completed his studies at Chiba University’s Department of Photography, Painting and Engineering with a focus on the study of film and photography. His photographic project Satchin earned him the prestigious Taiyo Award in 1964, shortly after he had joined the advertising agency Dentsu, where he worked until 1972. At Dentsu he met his wife Yoko, to whom he paid homage in Sentimental Journey, a photographic record of their honeymoon published in 1971. Eros and thanatos (sex and death) has been a central theme in Araki’s work; an abiding fascination with female genitalia and women’s bodies in Japanese bondage...
