David McCabe was born in Leicester, England, where he studied graphic design and photography. While at art school he won an international photo competition by a British photography magazine and was subsequently hired by a major photo studio in London. In 1960, McCabe moved to New York City, where he first worked as an assistant and studied under Alexey Brodovitch, Henry Wolf and Melvin Sokolsky. McCabe received his first assignment with Conde Nast in 1963, one year before Andy Warhol contacted him. In 1964, Pop artist Andy Warhol commissioned David McCabe, a young British photographer, to document his life for one year. The result was a unique portrait of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century and a compelling behind-the-scenes look at the New York City art world at a time when Pop art was becoming the latest incarnation of the avant-garde. McCabe took more than 2,500 photographs of Warhol with Salvador Dali, Roy Lichtenstein, Phillip Johnson, Barnett Newman, Robert Rauschenberg, Edie Sedgwick, Rudolf Nureyev, Richard Avedon, Tennessee Williams, Mick Jagger, Baby Jane Holzer and others in 1964 and 1965. In addition to providing a window into the world of seminal artists at a time of their growth, these photographs are fascinating in their depiction of a very heady time in the New York art world when art, music, society and fame converged. In the end, Warhol used McCabe’s photographs to help him construct his image, so much so that he decided to end the project. McCabe notes by then, “Andy already had an image of himself. He had a concept. He wanted his life recorded but I think during that period he changed his mind and decided he wanted to be in control himself.” McCabe continued photographing in the fashion industry. His photographs have been published in various magazines including LIFE, Harper’s Bazaar, Mademoiselle, Cosmopolitan, W, Elle, Vogue, The Times (London), The Guardian, New York Times Magazine, Black and White Magazine as well as multiple advertising campaigns.
