Erich Andres
The Ancient Charm of the Via Appia Antica in the 1950s

1954

About the Item

The black-and-white photograph presents a serene view along the Via Appia Antica, captured in 1954 by Erich Andres. This iconic ancient road, lined with cypress trees and remnants of Roman architecture, embodies the timeless beauty of Italy's countryside. In the distance, a couple can be seen strolling hand in hand, evoking a sense of tranquility and nostalgia. The rugged texture of the ancient stones and the lush greenery surrounding the path enhance the romantic atmosphere of the scene. This image transports viewers to a simpler time, reflecting the enduring charm of Italy's rich history. Erich Andres, born in Germany in 1905 and passing away in 1992, began his photographic journey in 1920 and was among the pioneers to embrace the Leica camera. His works have been displayed in various museums, such as the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. In 1951, Andres contributed to Edward Steichen's renowned exhibition "The Family of Man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This print is a new Fine Art Print on high-quality paper (Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta) and is produced by Whitewall. It will be shipped to you in a tube to keep shipping costs minimal.
