About the Item
Koch began taking photographs in Paris during the 1940s and later traveled to Barcelona where Barcelona Bird Seller was taken.. She would spend hours strolling the streets of Barcelona taking photos but she especially enjoyed the street life of Las Ramblas and rural America.
She continued her pursuit and passion of photography in Daleville, Ala., where her husband, Arthur, was stationed by the Army during the Korean War. This photo was taken in Alabama.
In a 1990 interview, Koch said she walked her dog Onyx in Daleville and "slowly began to make friends with the townsfolk, some of whom were shy of this citified lady."
"Ferne's pictures are about everyday life, in the tradition of Walker Evans and William Eggleston."
Willour donated two of her photographs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in 1990. He exhibited her work in a group show the same year.
Koch's work also is in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth and the International Center for Photography in New York. Her archives are housed by the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas.

When greeted by a small group Elephants I couldn’t help but notice how small their tusks were. I asked the ranger, why their tusks are so small. He replied “Sadly in Africa the Elephant population is now made up, predominantly of Elephants with shorter tusks. This is a result of poachers, killing longer tusked Elephants, in order to feed the illegal Ivory trade. This results in an unnatural form of “natural selection”, whereby the Elephants most likely to survive long enough to reproduce, are those with short tusks.” My name is Max Garner Reidy, I’m a 20-year-old photographer from North West London.
