In 1974 he obtained a degree in economics at the New York’s Bard College and, in the same period, he began to approach photography. In 1978 some pictures of his friend Richard Gere were published in Harper's Bazaar. From here he started to collaborate with Vogue, Newsweek, Esquire, Lei and Vogue Italia, gaining a reputation as a master of art and commercial photography. He created not only a new feminine image but also a new male model inspired by the style of the classical Greek sculptures. In addition he produced portraits and editorial fashion for Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview, and Rolling Stone, and also created successful advertising campaigns for Calvin Klein, Chanel, Donna Karan, Gap, Gianfranco Ferré, Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani, Levi’s, Pirelli, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Valentino, among others. Beginning in 1988 he directed numerous influential and award-winning music videos and commercials like “Cherish” (Madonna) and, in the Nineties, “Wicked Game” (Chris Isaak) and “In the Closet” (Michael Jackson). Working with Gianni Versace he transformed Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Helena Christensen and Kate Moss in star and beauty icons. His fine art photography has been the subject of exhibitions worldwide, with works residing in many significant public and private collections. In this modern picture in black and white, Ritts depicts the faces of a man and a woman lying down next to each other, looking directly into the camera. Evident is the spontaneity of the pose, typical of Ritts’ style. The two seem to be bohemian travelers: the woman, with light flowers in her long curly brown hair, wears a fur coat. The man wears a leather jacket and on his head, he has a long scarf knotted like a turban.
