About the Item
Joe Rosenthal's photograph "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" was first published in Sunday newspapers on February 25th 1945. It became extremely popular and was immediately reprinted in thousands of publications. The only photograph to win the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in the same year as its publication, it has come to be regarded as one of the most significant and recognizable images of the World War II, and was replicated as the United States Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
