About the Item
This Tamberma man is from a small village called Nadoba in Togo, about ten kilometres from the Benin border. The village is renowned for its facial scarification.
A fiery wind blew over us from the surrounding lowland plains as I sat under a tree and waited for the chief and the village men to decide if I would be allowed to photograph them. Eventually I was given permission and 20 men crowded around laughing much to the chagrin of my subject.
John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His images are all taken with natural light and his subjects in their day to day attire.
The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a contemporary look.
