About the Item

I met this young Himba girl near to a place called Etengwa in the far north of Namibia. We trekked a few kilometres in the midday heat, over a rocky hill to a small village within which lived a traditional healer and his wives. After approaching the village and announcing our presence, my guide asked me to follow him into the compound, making sure that I avoided walking through the imaginary line that passed from the holy fire of the village (often just smouldering ashes) to the first wife’s hut. In Himba villages is it a sign of great disrespect to cross this line unless you have been granted permission by the occupants of the village. The holy fire is so important to the Himba because everything of real community importance is done around it. This includes marriage, circumcision, and prayers for rain when drought occurs. Conversations with deceased elders, who act as conduits to their God, are also conducted here. Without a Himba guide it would be impossible to know which was the cooking fire and which was the holy fire as to the outsider both look identical. When we arrived in the village the young girl in this picture had acute stomach pains and was waiting to be treated by the village traditional healer. The serenity achieved by her treatment, apparent in this picture, belies the normal scepticism of the western world to traditional techniques. John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His images are all taken with natural light and his subjects in their day to day attire. The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a contemporary look.
