About the Item

A young girl from one of the few Mursi villages in Mago National Park, in the lower Omo valley. The Mursi are often engaged in flood retreat cultivation around two main rivers: the Omo and the Mago. This does not tie them to a single location as there is a constant search for cooler, better places for habitation and crop sowing, and also to find renewed pasture for their cattle herds. Virtually every significant social relationship – most notably marriage – is marked and validated by the exchange of cattle. Bridewealth – the transfer of payment from a groom to his bride’s father – will ideally involve the transfer of 38 head of cattle. Occasionally a rifle is included, an essential tool for a herder, which is treated as the equivalent of 4 cattle. The bride’s father then has to meet the demands of a wide range of relatives from different clans, so through the norms of societal relations, i.e. marriage (and payment), animals are continually redistributed around the community. John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His images are all taken with natural light and in their day to day attire. John Kenny’s black and white photographic portraits are taken on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa and India. All shot with natural light and with the subjects in their day to day attire they reveal the pride and strength inherent in tradional ways of life. The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a very contemporary feel.
