About the Item
This is a black and white photograph of three soldiers seated on a bridge, above the Arno River, Florence, Italy 1958 by Leonard Freed. It is a 12" x 16" gelatin silver print signed by the photographer. The image appears on page 52 of Freed's monograph Leonard Freed: Photographs 1954-1990 (Nathan Image, 1991).
The photograph of the soldiers in Florence was taken during one of Freed’s first visits to Italy. Three young men enjoy a tranquil moment seated on the bridge, with three adjacent arches over the river. One is reading or maybe he is looking for a passage in the book, while his two friends admire the Arno river that divides in two parts the city of Florence.
Leonard Freed discovered Little Italy in New York City early in his career and was charmed by Italians and their country of origin. The photographer made numerous trips to Italy, especially to Rome and Naples, capturing everyday life, love, sadness, joy of family gatherings, food and leisure. Freed's series of photographs in Italy reflect the “Italian spirit,” the art of enjoying the moment, the culture and lifestyle of a Latin country.

Artist’s Bio:
Leonard Freed (1929-2006) was an American photographer from Brooklyn, New York. His "Black in White America" series made him known as a documentarian, a social documentary photographer. Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 onwards and as a Magnum photographer Freed traveled widely abroad and, in the US, photographing African Americans (1964-65), events in Israel (1967-68, 1973), and the New York City police department (1972-79). Freed's coverage of the American civil rights movement is well-known as are his photo essays on New York, Italy, Germany, The Kate Series, among others.

Leonard Freed
Leonard Freed was born on October 23, 1929, in Brooklyn. Although Freed's photographic career is defined by documentary photo essays, such as Black in White America, Freed traveled extensively and captured people, places and things that interested him in locations around the globe. A Magnum photographer, Freed traveled widely, photographing African Americans in America from 1964–65, events in Israel from 1967–68 and in 1973 and the New York City police department from 1972–79, to name a few celebrated assignments. Freed’s coverage of the American civil rights movement made him famous, although he continued to produce photo essays on New York, Italians and many other subjects. Leonard Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 until his death on November 29, 2006, Philipstown.

Heinz Finke (born January 27, 1915 in Haldensleben ; November 28, 2007 in Konstanz ) was a German photographer and photojournalist.
Heinz Finke, whose father died in the First World War , was forced into the Reich Labor Service in 1935, later as a "PK-Bildberichter" for the army newspaper "Der Sieg" in the Propaganda Company 625 of the Wehrmacht . There he met the journalist Hans Bayer , who became known as " Thaddäus Troll " after the war . After the end of the war he settled in Wertheim am Main and founded the "Wertheimer Pressedienst". Among other things, he worked for the then publisher and later Federal President Theodor Heuss . As the holder of one of the rare American press licenses, he was like for several daily newspapersFränkische Rundschau , Main-Post , Mannheimer Morgen and Hannoversche Allgemeine work as text and image authors.
Finke lived since 1951 in Konstanz and was Ullstein people to the publisher for the recent Berliner John Weyl founded Südkurier active in Konstanz as a press photographer. He became known as a photo reporter in the post-war years, especially with his photo reports, for example about Theodor Heuss , Albert Schweitzer , Willy Brandt and Konrad Adenauer...
