About the Item

The photographs date from 1987 to 2006, and were made in the deserts of central and southern Arizona. The originals are 16”x20” gelatin silver photographs printed from 4”x5” Polaroid Type 55 instant film negatives. The process of developing the film on-site creates the rough edges around the image margins and these process marks are deliberately included as part of the full negative. The series was originally conceived as saguaro portraits and given the title “Desert Citizens.” For centuries desert people have considered saguaros to be the souls of lost ancestors.
