About the Item
Dakekanba and Snow Barriers, Hokkaido, Japan by Michael Kenna presents a sublime scene. Dark snow barriers contrast with the blanket of stark white snow. A single tree stands in the middle of the landscape, it's dark branches coated in snow.
Dakekanba and Snow Barriers, Hokkaido, Japan by Michael Kenna is listed as a 7.75 x 8 inch sepia toned gelatin silver print, available in an edition of 25. This photograph is mounted onto a 20 x 16 inch mat board, with a window overmat. This photograph is signed, titled, negative date, print date and numbered by Michael Kenna.
Michael Kenna's black and white photographs are powerful and alluring. His imagery transports you to iconic and placid landscapes where you can gaze in solitude. Because Kenna makes such long exposures, often minutes or sometimes hours long, the landscape presents itself as something that cannot be seen with the naked eye, abstracting reality. This is a trademark of his work for which he has become legendary.
Michael Kenna's photographs are housed in over 100 museum and institution collections throughout the world, including the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, George Eastman House, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Musée national d'Art modern, Paris, San Francisco Modern Art Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
He has received several awards including an Honorary Master of Arts from Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, and the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the Ministry of Culture, France.

Image size: 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. Mario Algaze is a contemporary Cuban-American photographer whose work articulates the counter-culture of Latin America, the Caribbean and Cuba. In 1960, at only thirteen years old, Algaze was exiled from Cuba. He relocated to America and settled in Miami, Florida. Miami offered a rich cultural mecca that encouraged Algaze to travel throughout Central and South America. These trips allowed him a glimpse of belonging within a familiar culture. In finding his identity after exile, he began photographing Latin America in the 1970’s while reconnecting with the feeling of home. His photographs embody the everyday of Latin life. Between his travels in the late 70’s, Algaze studied visual art at Miami Dade College. Algaze’s masterful command of light illuminates his street scenes that detail the struggles and victories of Latin culture. The vision Algaze has made him an award-winning photographer and in 1985 was the recipient of the Individual Florida Artist Fellowship and in 1989, received the Cintas Foundation Fellowship in Visual Arts. A retrospective collection of his work from 1974-2008 is showcased in his book A Respect for Light: The Latin American...Category

- #19, 1970s Nightclubs of Chicago South Side - Rare Vintage Silver Gelatin PrintLocated in London, GBA camera is a window through which a photographer interacts with the world, and it's up to the operator to decide whether his camera will be a barrier or a mirror between he and his subjects. In the 1970s, Michael Abramson chose the latter path when he brought his camera to Pepper's Hideout on Chicago's South Side. Following in the footsteps of his acknowledged influence Gyula Halász, a Hungarian photographer better known as Brassaï who became the pre-eminent chronicler of the Paris nightlife he loved so much, Abramson initiated himself into the nightlife of Chicago's predominantly black neighbourhoods. He was very much a part of the scene he documented on film, drinking, laughing, and dancing with his subjects into small hours and becoming as much a part of the atmosphere as the locals who frequented the same nightspots he did. - Joe Tangari (Numero Group, 2009) This series won Abramson a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1978 and launched his career as a photojournalist. Eventually the project resulted in a hardbound book, Light: On the South Side, including the Grammy and Mojo nominated album, featuring Chicago blues...Category
