About the Item

Michael Meyersfeld's Sea Point Pool series is an important collection in the context of modern South Africa. Meyersfeld became fascinated by Cape Town's Sea Point Pool as a young man, spending time in the holidays there with friends. He created many images of the pool at different points in time - and different points in history. He describes his early memories of the pool: "The iconic Sea Point Pool in Cape Town is a complex consisting of an Olympic-sized pool, two splash pools for children, and a fully equipped springboard diving pool. They are filtered sea water pools, and majestically overlook the Atlantic Ocean. It was built circa 1930. As a young university student, and for many years thereafter, I, together with a group of friends, was fortunate enough to spend the summer holidays in this idyllic setting. The Sea Point Pool, together with the Clifton beaches, were the setting of never ending days of sun and laughter. My involvement with photography was at this stage well established, and the Sea Point Pool was a magnet of great fascination." And about his artistic practice: "For many years the comment 'lonely' was applied to my work but several years ago Dr. Gerhard Schoeman commented on my image Sea Point Swimmers in his publication Thinking Photographs - Art, History, Time and Reproducibility. He used the word 'stillness' to describe this image, and for the first time I felt that the correct adjective had been used to describe my work, or at very least what I hoped my work would convey. My entire photographic life has been predicated on an intuitive response to what I observe and what draws me, which inevitably has a quality of stillness." Michael Meyersfeld's work is in many public and private collections, including the Johannesburg Art Gallery. He has exhibited over 25 times, including recently at the Pretoria Art Museum. Size: 95cm x 71cm Condition: Excellent. The work is printed to museum-standard, on Hahnemuele Fine Art Photo Rag paper, using archival inks. Limited Edition of 10 Certificate of Authenticity, signed by the artist, will accompany the piece. This confirms provenance and artistic copyright. Framing and Mounting Options Available.
