About the Item
I am interested in describing loss and fragility through familiar objects. Ideas of impermanence have always been with me as my parents were refugees from Europe. My mother grew up in Berlin in a wealthy family. On the eve of Kristallnacht, she was put on a train to Holland with a potato. My father, humbled by childhood hardship, was a frugal man, who always wore shirts with holes. In acknowledgement, pointing to the hole he would say, “This is life.” Growing up I heard many stories about how uncertain life is. I inherited my parents’ memories, and this made life and its' details precious to me.
In this series I use fragments as symbols. The shattered glass and cut hair speak of violence and abrupt endings. The plates and the remnants belonging to my mother have lasted over decades and remain beautiful; significant of survival. The crumpled leaves are reminders of our inevitable decay back to dust. These objects, in their defenselessness, illuminate weakness as a tangible presence.
